A man who pretended to be a senior police officer arrested some people. Later, he disappeared with their money and phones.
The man said his name was ASP Byarugaba James. He told the officers at Kinawataka Police Station that he was from Entebbe Police Station.
He said he was following up on a case about stolen things from Entebbe Hospital.
According to a report by Detective Sergeant Kawere Lazarus, this man was with a real police officer called Corporal Khaukha Sam.
Both of them left the police station together for duty. Byarugaba led Corporal Khaukha to a place where he said they could find the stolen phone.
At that place, they arrested three people: Kalungi Brian, Nakimuli Reshima, and Namugaya Charity.
They said these people had phones, shoes, and clothes stolen from Entebbe Hospital.
The suspects were then taken to Kinawataka Police Station for questioning.
Later, Namugaya led the officers to arrest her boyfriend, Oling Isima, at his workplace.
While they were going back to the police station, Byarugaba asked to step aside to photocopy a national ID. After that, no one saw him again.
He disappeared with the phones he had recovered.
Further investigations showed that there is no police officer called ASP Byarugaba James at Entebbe Police Station.
Also, there is no police post called Musaana, which the fake officer had mentioned before. The special document numbers (SD references) he gave were fake too.
Police also found out that after the arrest, Byarugaba went back to the suspects’ room.
He stole 450,000 shillings in cash and four mobile phones before vanishing.
The four suspects arrested are still held at Kinawataka Police Station. They are waiting to be sent to the right police station.
Meanwhile, police are working hard to find and catch the fake officer. His real identity is still unknown.
The police have opened two cases. One case is for impersonation, which means pretending to be a police officer.
The second case is for theft, which means stealing money and phones. The case numbers are SD Ref 37/14/05/25 for impersonation and SD Ref 36/14/05/25 for theft.
This case shows how easy it is for someone to lie about being a police officer. Even real police officers were fooled by this man.
The public is warned to be careful. If someone claims to be a police officer, always ask for proper identification.
The police are asking people to report anyone acting suspiciously or claiming to be an officer without proof. This will help stop crimes like this in the future.
