The body of Canon Jimmy Musimbi, the former Chairperson of the Manafwa District Service Commission, has finally been handed over to his grieving family—ten days after a tragic road accident in Buikwe District that claimed several lives.
The accident, which occurred at Makindu, involved a YY Bus that collided with a Scania truck before overturning and bursting into flames.
Canon Musimbi was one of the passengers on board the ill-fated bus when the horrific crash took place.
According to eyewitness reports, the impact was severe, and chaos erupted as the bus caught fire shortly after the collision. Several passengers were injured, while others, including Musimbi, died on the spot.
In the days that followed, Canon Musimbi’s family struggled to get information about the whereabouts of his body.
Their grief was compounded by what they described as the lack of transparency and poor communication from both the YY Bus Company and the Uganda Police.
Speaking to the media, a family spokesperson expressed deep disappointment over how the situation was handled.
“It was heartbreaking not knowing where our father's body was. The silence from the company and police made things even worse. We expected timely updates and proper handling, but all we got was silence and confusion,” they said.
The family’s concern gained public attention last week when they made a public appeal, calling for clarity and assistance in locating Musimbi's remains.
Social media users and community leaders joined the conversation, urging the authorities and the bus company to respond swiftly.
On Thursday, the family finally received the body, bringing some level of closure after days of anxiety and distress. The handover came after the remains were positively identified through forensic procedures.
“We thank all those who stood with us during this painful period. It has not been easy, but we are relieved to finally have our father’s body so we can lay him to rest with dignity,” the family shared.
The accident has reignited conversations about road safety, emergency response, and the responsibilities of transport companies in Uganda.
Many have criticized the lack of proper systems to handle such emergencies, especially when it comes to identifying and accounting for victims.
Transport analysts say the YY Bus Company must take responsibility and work closely with relevant authorities to ensure better safety and accountability in future incidents.
Canon Musimbi was widely respected in Manafwa District and beyond for his dedicated service in the education and public administration sectors. His death has been described as a huge loss to the region.
Preparations for his burial are underway, with family, friends, and former colleagues expected to gather to pay their final respects.
