President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the leader of Uganda for nearly 40 years, has asked the people of Uganda to forgive him for any mistakes made during his time in power.
He especially apologized to the people of Buganda, a large and important kingdom in Uganda.
President Museveni made the apology while speaking with his wife, First Lady Janet Museveni, in public. He said that he and his government accept full responsibility for the problems and mistakes they have made over the years.
“We humbly take the responsibility of all the mistakes made by ourselves,” President Museveni said.
“Today, we stand here to repent and ask for your forgiveness, especially the people of Buganda and the whole of Uganda. We ask you, oh Lord, to soften their hardened hearts and give us favor in their eyes.”
This apology has caused many different reactions from people across Uganda. Some have praised the president for being humble and honest. They say it takes courage to admit mistakes and ask for forgiveness.
Others, however, have been skeptical. They think the apology might be a political move, especially because Uganda is preparing for general elections in 2026.
Many people believe that President Museveni is trying to gain support from voters by apologizing now. Some say that words alone are not enough; they want to see real changes in how the country is run.
The spokesperson for the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Emmanuel Dombo Lumala, gave more explanation about the apology.
He said that President Museveni apologized to Buganda because he took responsibility for the bad things that happened to the Buganda people before he became president.
Dombo explained that when Museveni came to power, he accepted the duty to heal the wounds caused by earlier governments. These governments had many fights with the Buganda Kingdom, and the people suffered because of this.
He also said that the president’s apology was not just political but also spiritual. Museveni wanted to show humility not only to the people but also before God. The president hopes this will help bring peace and unity to Uganda.
The Buganda Kingdom has not yet officially responded to the apology. Many people are watching closely to see how the kingdom’s leaders will react.
Uganda has a long history of political challenges, especially between the central government and Buganda. Buganda is one of the largest cultural kingdoms in Uganda and has a strong influence on the country’s politics and culture.
The relationship between the government and Buganda has sometimes been tense because of past conflicts.
President Museveni’s apology is seen by some as a step toward healing these old wounds. But others say that real peace will only come if the government makes serious efforts to respect the rights and traditions of the Buganda people.
