Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa has made strong claims against Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of being behind state brutality during the 2022 post-election protests.
According to Barasa, Gachagua was acting as the head of state when President William Ruto was away on an international trip.
Speaking in a video shared on his official X account, Barasa did not hold back.
"When the President left the country, Gachagua was left in charge.
That is when the police raided Northlands and destroyed property.
That is when the security of Uhuru Kenyatta and Mama Ngina was withdrawn.
That is also when there were plans to harm Raila Odinga during the Azimio protests," he claimed.
Barasa believes that the state used excessive force on protesters, and he blames Gachagua for giving the green light.
He added that these actions were not only unlawful but also intended to silence opposition voices.
This is not the first time the Kimilili MP has attacked the former Deputy President.
In June 2024, Barasa blamed Gachagua for the invasion of Parliament by angry Gen Z protesters.
He claimed Gachagua’s talk of “government shares” and his push for the “one man, one shilling, one vote” policy caused division and unrest.
“Gachagua is misleading the nation,” Barasa said. “His words encouraged young people to believe the government is not for them, and that is why they stormed Parliament.”
Barasa has even gone further to call for Gachagua’s impeachment.
He says the former Deputy President is more concerned about his own community than national unity.
“This is a government for all Kenyans, not just one region.
Gachagua should be held accountable,” Barasa told journalists.
In response to these accusations, Former Deputy President Gachagua has denied any involvement in the violent events.
He dismissed Barasa’s claims as politically motivated and insisted he supports the rule of law.
“These are just baseless allegations meant to damage my name.
I have always respected the law, and I was not involved in any violence,” Gachagua said during a press briefing.
As the political battle continues, many Kenyans are watching closely.
