On May 28, 2025, President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni said sorry to the people of Uganda.
They said sorry for mistakes made during the many years they have been in power. Museveni has been President for almost 40 years.
The apology happened during a church service. President Museveni asked God and Ugandans to forgive him and his government. He especially asked forgiveness from the people of Buganda, a region in Uganda. He said:
“We humbly take responsibility for all the mistakes made by ourselves. We stand here to repent and ask for your forgiveness, especially the people of Buganda.”
This apology surprised many people in Uganda. Some leaders and opposition members spoke about it on social media.
One of the people who spoke out was Robert Kyagulanyi, also called Bobi Wine. He is the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party.
On X (formerly Twitter), Bobi Wine said that President Museveni must stop the abduction of people who do not agree with the government. He said this is the only way Ugandans will forgive the President.
Another important voice was Lawyer Sarah Bireete. She also spoke on X and gave five important conditions. She said these conditions must happen if President Museveni really wants forgiveness from Ugandans.
Here are the five things Lawyer Sarah Bireete wants:
1. Release all political prisoners
Many people who speak against the government are locked up. Lawyer Sarah says they must be set free.
2. Remove General Muhoozi from the army
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba is President Museveni’s son. He is a top army officer. Many people want him removed from the army because they think he is too powerful and may take over leadership unfairly.
3. Stop abducting people who disagree with the government
People who speak out against the government have often been taken by security officers. Lawyer Sarah says this must stop immediately.
4. Make the political system fair for everyone
All political parties and leaders should have a fair chance to compete in elections. No one should be stopped or treated badly because of their political beliefs.
5. President Museveni should retire
After almost 40 years in power, Lawyer Sarah says it is time for President Museveni to step down and let new leaders take charge.
Many Ugandans agree with Lawyer Sarah Bireete’s demands. They want a country where everyone can speak freely and take part in politics without fear.
The apology by President Museveni shows that he understands there have been problems. But many people say sorry is not enough. They want real changes to happen.
President Museveni has ruled Uganda since 1986. During this time, his government has been accused of arresting opposition leaders, using force against protesters, and limiting freedom of speech.
The call to remove General Muhoozi is especially strong. Some people worry that Muhoozi’s rise in the army is a way to keep power in the family. This worries those who want Uganda to be led by democratic rules.
Robert Kyagulanyi, Bobi Wine, said that stopping abductions is very important. He said people must not be taken and held secretly just because they disagree with the government.
Lawyer Sarah’s call for a fair political system means everyone should have the same rights. Elections must be free and fair without cheating or violence.
Finally, many Ugandans want President Museveni to retire peacefully. They want new leaders who can bring fresh ideas and help the country grow.
