Kenyans have taken to social media to mock Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni following his recent declaration that Uganda is entitled to access the Indian Ocean and that “in the future, we will have wars” over the matter.
The remarks, which many interpreted as a veiled threat toward neighboring countries, sparked a wave of sarcastic and humorous reactions online.
On Facebook, hundreds of users flooded comment sections with witty remarks and jokes, ridiculing Museveni’s claim of ocean entitlement.
One user, Ice Chäïñ, warned, “Don’t play with Kenyans,” while another, Brayo Wa Bungoma, sarcastically wrote, “Which future are you talking about? We will just send our AP to fight.”
Others poked fun at Museveni’s age and long tenure in power, suggesting his talk of “future wars” was far-fetched. Okewgi Jakayado asked, “Which future mzee, is there any?” while Omanyo Joseph joked, “Having ‘Museveni’ and ‘future’ in one sentence is very big progress in grammar.”
Some commenters, like Doreen Odala, turned the president’s geographical confusion into humor, asking, “You are bordering Victoria Ocean, whom are you going to fight with? Suluhu or Ruto?” Jasper Etale added historical context, noting, “Before 1902, Uganda’s border with Kenya was at Naivasha. That’s why it was called the Uganda Railway.”
Others used satire to mock Museveni’s ambition. Ever Sams wrote, “Thank God sir, because dreaming is free, so keep dreaming about the ocean and the fish inside.”
Steve Kivuti quipped, “You can start expanding Lake Victoria to the sea in your next government. This can even be your campaign manifesto.”
Another Kenyan, Muliwa Samuel, advised humorously, “Mr. President, employ a good novelist and instruct them to write a fiction book titled ‘My Wish to Own an Ocean.’”
Reagan Jason added, “They should just rename the Ugandan part of Lake Victoria to the Ugandan Ocean.”
The reactions reveal Kenyans’ trademark online wit and ability to turn political statements into lighthearted banter.
