Amid alleged demands from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) for the deputy president slot in exchange for supporting President William Ruto’s re-election bid in the next general election, political analysts have started weighing in on potential candidates.

Among them is Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, whose chances, according to some experts, may be limited.

Speaking to People’s Daily on Friday, university don Professor Kaburi Kanoti explained that Wanga may not be considered due to the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s family political interests. 

Kanoti suggested that these interests are likely to influence ODM’s decisions on key political alignments, potentially blocking Wanga from securing the coveted position.

“This is a sensitive matter. Wanga is a strong leader, but the late Raila Odinga’s political legacy and family interests will likely guide ODM’s moves,” Kanoti noted. 

He highlighted that the party might prefer candidates who align more closely with these family and political considerations.

Instead, Kanoti pointed to other popular leaders as possible choices for the deputy president position. Among those he mentioned were Edwin Sifuna, the Nairobi Senator and Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino.

According to the professor, figures like Sifuna have the profile and political connections that make them more suitable in ODM’s calculations.

Raila Odinga’s passing has created a new political dynamic in Kenya. President Ruto now faces a more complex landscape as he seeks to secure his seat for another five-year term. 

The ODM’s demands for the deputy president slot are part of this shifting political equation, forcing alliances and potential running mate selections to be carefully considered.

Political observers note that the next few months will be crucial in shaping the ticket for the 2027 elections.
