According to their son, Chris Ayienda, tensions had been rising in the household shortly before the tragedy. He revealed that the family’s newly hired househelp was in a relationship with the farmhand, and the affair had resulted in a pregnancy.
“The girl was not sure if she wanted to keep the baby. My parents tried to intervene, but the farmhand started making threats. He even warned that he would kill her if she dared terminate the pregnancy,” Ayienda told reporters.
The situation escalated when the househelp mysteriously disappeared on Saturday morning. Hours later, neighbors noticed the couple’s animals roaming unattended, raising suspicions that something was wrong.
When concerned residents went to check, they discovered the elderly couple was missing. Investigations later revealed that the farmhand was behaving suspiciously and had the househelp’s phone.
Police arrested him after he reportedly gave rude and evasive answers when questioned about the whereabouts of his employers.
The tragic turn of events shocked the community, as the Machogus were described as humble church-going people who lived peacefully with their neighbors. Friends and family were heartbroken to learn that the couple was murdered shortly after attending a service, only to be betrayed by the very person they had trusted to work on their farm.
The son further alleged that his mother had expressed concerns to his sister earlier, saying the househelp’s sudden disappearance worried her.
He believes the farmhand may have harmed her before turning against his parents.
As of now, the househelp’s whereabouts remain unknown, and investigators are still piecing together the events that led to the killings.
The bodies of Pius and Jerusha have since been moved to the Elburgon Sub-County Mortuary as the family prepares for burial.
