A brewing constitutional crisis in Nairobi has escalated as senators accuse Governor Johnson Sakaja of growing "arrogant" due to the protective shield provided by President William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga.
The standoff intensified after Sakaja snubbed a Senate Education Committee summons on Thursday, marking yet another instance of defiance against parliamentary oversight.
Sakaja was scheduled to appear before the committee to account for the stalled rollout of the "One Primary Education" initiative, a flagship program aimed at providing free primary schooling across Nairobi's wards.
Sources close to the Senate revealed that the governor cited a prior engagement, but critics, including Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, dismissed the excuse as "contemptuous," echoing similar no-shows in 2023 when Sakaja was spotted at a high-profile football match with Ruto and Odinga.
The incident has reignited fury over Sakaja's governance, following a narrow escape from impeachment last month.
In early September, over 80 Nairobi MCAs from both UDA and ODM parties signed a motion accusing the governor of incompetence, corruption, and neglecting ward funds.
The plot unraveled only after Ruto hosted UDA MCAs at State House and Odinga convened ODM reps at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation, granting Sakaja a 60-day grace period to address grievances.
Senators, led by Kakamega's Boni Khalwale, have now weighed in sharply. "Sakaja's arrogance stems from the godfathers' indulgence;
Ruto and Raila saved him once, but this snub undermines devolution," Khalwale declared in a Senate plenary.
