On Tuesday night, during a TV interview, Mr. Sifuna harshly criticized the Government of National Unity and stated that the opposition would not support President William Ruto’s bid for a second term.
However, the leaders from Nairobi County, led by Makadara MP George Aladwa, have said they are fed up with Mr. Sifuna and that the time has come for him to leave the party.
Mr. Aladwa, who also serves as ODM's Nairobi County Chairperson, claimed that Mr. Sifuna is promoting the false notion that his remarks are endorsed by opposition leader Raila Odinga, which is not the case.
"During that interview, he was speaking in his personal capacity, not as a party leader. We follow the direction set by President Ruto and Mr. Odinga.
If Sifuna does not want to go along with that direction, then he is free to leave ODM," said Mr. Aladwa.
Nonetheless, he acknowledged that Mr. Sifuna’s ability to express dissenting views shows that ODM is a party that tolerates opposing opinions.
However, he lamented that the senator's current stance has become intolerable.
"We are following the agreement between the President and Raila—an agreement that Sifuna himself signed.
If he now thinks it is meaningless, then he should resign from the party and find another platform from which to continue his politics of attacking the government," Mr. Aladwa added.
While speaking during the interview, ODM secretary general and Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna said that ODM is in no way involved in any plan to ensure President Ruto is re-elected in 2027.
He went a step further and vowed that he would support another candidate who would ensure President Ruto serves only one term.
And sources within ODM reveal that some of Mr. Odinga’s close political allies are pressuring him to remove Mr. Sifuna from his position.
“Sifuna must start watching his words, because some of us are beginning to feel that he is being used by the opposition to destabilize our party,” said one ODM MP who requested anonymity.
