ODM party secretary general Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP, Hon Babu Owino are two key players in Raila Odinga's camp who have attracted a lot of attention over their defiance against the established political order.
Babu Owino has declared his intentions to vie for Nairobi gubernatorial seat, challenging the incumbent governor Johnson Sakaja, who could receive direct endorsement from former prime minister Raila Odinga.
While Edwin Sifuna, who is the current senator of Nairobi could seek re-election in 2027 elections, political analysts have suggested that he can still win whether Raila backs him or not.
According to University of Nairobi Lecturer and political analyst Professor Herman Manyora, has opined on Edwin Sifuna's recent onslaught against President William Ruto, and how it can affect his Nairobi senatorial race.
With Edwin Sifuna’s recent threat to quit ODM if former Prime Minister Raila Odinga endorses President William Ruto in the 2027 presidential race, Prof Manyora notes that this bold stance could force Raila to back another senatorial candidate to punish Sifuna.
Speaking on 4, August 2025, Prof Manyora, nevertheless noted that the vocal legislator does not need Raila's direct endorsement to win the Nairobi senatorial seat.
"As long as Sifuna does not directly confront or insult Raila, he can win the senatorial seat without Raila's support. In fact, Raila could support another candidate, and Sifuna could still win.
Raila can support Sakaja, and Babu Owino can still win as long as they do not appear to be fighting directly against Raila Odinga," Manyora stated.
According to Prof Manyora, Sifuna's easy feat to secure re-election without Raila's back up is attributed to his recent influence and political maneuver that can make him stand independently.
